Alcohol and weather suspected causes in deadly I-80/94 crash

HAMMOND, Ind., (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police say that Tuesday, around 11:30 p.m., Troopers were dispatched to a multiple vehicle crash on I-80/94 WB at the 1.0-mile marker. This is near the exit ramp to Calumet Avenue. Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Landowski revealed that a black 2001 Chevrolet Malibu was westbound on I-80/94 approaching the exit ramp for Calumet Avenue when it struck impact attenuator.
Following this impact, the Malibu then struck a semi that was traveling in the right lane. This semi was a white 2005 Freightliner, driven by David Urzedowski, 42 years of age, an Illinois resident. As a result of this impact, both vehicles then drove to the left striking a second semi before all three vehicles came to a rest against the median wall. The second semi is a white 2008 Volvo driven by Robert A. Satterfield, 44 years of age, of Chicago, IL. The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours for crash investigation and scene cleanup.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash, as well as the heavy rain and limited visibility.

The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was Eimy Ocampo-Ayala, 21 years of age from Hammond, IN. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lake County Coroner.
