FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Rescue crews in Fort Wayne are still not sure how a car ended up in the St. Marys River with a man’s body inside.
Fort Wayne Fire Department officials say they were called around 3:30 a.m. Sunday to the report of a car in the river at Broadway and Rudisill.
Onstar was advising police dispatch that they were getting information regarding a vehicle either in the river or alongside the river. A short time later Onstar advised that they were seeing that the water was in the river and moving towards the bridge located at Bluffton Road.
Upon arrival, Police and Fire found where the car went into the river. The vehicle was then located about 100 yards downstream completely submerged under water.
Due to the conditions, first responders determined not to be safe for divers to enter the water.
Wreckers were used to bring the car to shore. It was then discovered that one victim was still inside the vehicle.
The vehicle was pulled from the river just south of the Bluffton Street Bridge and at this time Medics Pronounced the victim deceased.
Fatal Team Investigators were called to the scene as well as the Department of Natural Resources Officers to investigate and attempt to determine the cause of this accident.
The Identity of the victim will be released at a later time by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
