Domestic disturbance prompts Monday morning standoff

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – FWPD officials say one man is being questioned after an hours-long standoff Monday morning.
Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a home in the 3700 block of Chestnut St on a report of a disturbance with weapons just before 5 a.m. They spoke with an adult female, who confirmed she was involved in a disturbance with a male inside a home, and that the male was armed with a gun.

Officers needed to speak with the male as part of the investigation to determine what happened and if any criminal charges would be necessary. The male refused to exit the home, so officers tried using a loudspeaker to call the suspect out, but the suspect did not cooperate.

Because of the report of the gun, assistance was requested from the Emergency Services Team and the Crisis Response Team, as these units are equipped to bring chaotic scenes to peaceful resolutions. Officers continued using a loudspeaker to try to convince the suspect to exit the home, and negotiators tried calling any phones the suspect may have had.

After hours of the suspect refusing to cooperate, officers deployed a distraction device in an attempt to motivate the suspect to surrender peacefully, but the suspect still refused to cooperate. Finally, shortly before 8 a.m., officers deployed a chemical agent into the home that finally convinced the suspect to exit and surrender to police.

There were no reported injuries from this incident. The suspect is currently being interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of all of the interviews, detectives will decide what, if any, charges are appropriate.
