FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Rescue crews in Fort Wayne are still not sure how a car ended up in the St. Marys River with a man’s body inside.
Fort Wayne Fire Department officials say they were called around 3:30 a.m. Sunday to the report of a car in the river at Broadway and Rudisill.
Onstar was advising police dispatch that they were getting information regarding a vehicle either in the river or alongside the river. A short time later Onstar advised that they were seeing that the water was in the river and moving towards the bridge located at Bluffton Road.
Upon arrival, Police and Fire found where the car went into the river. The vehicle was then located about 100 yards downstream completely submerged under water.
Due to the conditions, first responders determined not to be safe for divers to enter the water.
Wreckers were used to bring the car to shore. It was then discovered that one victim was still inside the vehicle. He was later identified as Brian W. Coburn, 36, of South Whitley.
The vehicle was pulled from the river just south of the Bluffton Street Bridge and Coburn was pronounced deceased.
The Allen County Coroner determined that he drowned and deemed the death accidental.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
Brian W. Coburn is the 8th Fatal Traffic Crash in Allen County for 2019.
