Fire damages Waynedale apartment, crews rescue residents and dog

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fire damaged a Waynedale apartment building Wednesday morning. The Fort Wayne Fire Department was dispatched to 1817 Woodhaven Drive. A crew arrived 2 minutes after the call that came in around 11:17 a.m.

Firefighters found smoke coming from a first-floor apartment with several people on second-floor balconies needing to be rescued. Several other fire units arrived and assisted with fire attack and removing the people from balconies.
The building was searched and a dog was found alive in a second-floor apartment and turned over to animal control.

The occupant of the apartment was alerted by smoke detectors and was able to escape prior to fire department arrival. The fire was under control in 12 minutes and the cause is still under investigation.
