Indiana ranks second nationwide for child abuse

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – A new report shows Indiana has the second highest rate of child abuse rates in the country.
According to the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Indiana is second behind only Kentucky.

The new “Child Maltreatment” report uses 2017 data and found that child abuse deaths totaled 78 in Indiana. The state reported 18.6 per 1,000 had been abused.

Indiana’s child victim total of 29,918 was an increase of 34 percent from four years earlier. The data found that at a rate double the national average.
