ELKHART CO., Ind. (ADAMS)- Indiana State Police say that one man is behind bars after a chase in Elkhart County.
Wednesday afternoon, they say the man led them in pursuit on the Indiana Toll Road before crashing and then fleeing on foot.
Around 4:35 p.m., on February 20, 2019, Trooper Aaron Price and Trooper Jacob Bill attempted to stop a black 2015 Jeep for a traffic violation as it traveled eastbound near the 95.4-mile marker. This is just west of the CR 17 exit.
Once Price and Bill activated the lights on their fully marked Ford Crown Victoria police car, the Jeep moved to the right, but instead of stopping, sped off and continued eastbound. The Jeep continued eastbound reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. At exit 101 for Bristol, the Jeep attempted to exit but was going too fast for the ramp and ended up driving down an embankment and crashing into a tree line.
The driver, identified as Waylon Weaver, 32 of Middlebury, IN got out of the Jeep and fled on foot. Price and Bill caught up to Weaver and safely took him into custody after Weaver fell in a sand pit.
Weaver was taken to an Elkhart General Hospital to be medically cleared from crashing and then taken to the Elkhart County Jail where he faces preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, Resisting Law Enforcement With a Vehicle, Criminal Recklessness, Reckless Driving, and an active warrant out of Elkhart County.
