MERCER CO., Ohio (ADAMS) – The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents to beware of a phone scammer pretending to be official.
Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said Monday that his office received notice of a potential scam in Mercer County. Deputies were contacted by an individual who indicated he received a phone call from someone who identified themselves as a Deputy Sheriff and advising the subject there was a warrant for his arrest.
The individual advised him to go to the Sheriff’s Office and put money inside the Kiosk using his own name.
Officials with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office say that they will not call people regarding warrants requesting money.
Warrants can be checked on the Sheriff’s Office website, www.mercerountysheriff.org.
Sheriff Grey urges caution when dealing with individuals on the phone, as phone numbers can be “Spoofed” to appear like a local phone number.
