STEUBEN Co., Ind. (ADAMS) – Police in Steuben County say one person is dead after a head-on crash in yesterday afternoon. Officers responded to State Road 127 near County Road 500 North, west of I-69 outside Pokagon State Park, at about noon Monday.
Upon the arrival of initial responding deputies, it was discovered that the crash involved two vehicles with one fatality. Preliminary crash scene investigation indicated that a white 2014 Honda Civic driven by 68-year-old Sandra A. Keck of Orland, IN was southbound on SR 127 and traveled off the west side of the roadway for an unknown reason.
Keck then overcorrected her vehicle back onto the roadway which caused the Honda Civic to travel left of the center line into the path of a northbound maroon 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 68-year-old Dorothy J. Spangler of Fremont, IN.
The two vehicles collided head-on and the Ford F-150 came to rest off of the east side of the roadway, while the Honda Civic came to rest in the middle of SR 127. Both Keck and Spangler were transported to Cameron Memorial Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries in stable condition.
A passenger in Dorothy Spangler’s vehicle, 59-year-old Michael Eugene Spangler of Fremont, IN was pronounced dead at the scene due to apparent blunt force trauma.
The weather was clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the crash. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor and the crash still remains under investigation.
