WELLS CO., Ind. (ADAMS) The Indiana Department of Transportation says that S.R. 1 is tentatively scheduled to close on or after, Thursday, May 9, while contractors complete a full-depth reclamation between S.R. 18 and S.R. 218.
On Thursday, May 9, INDOT contractors will begin the work, which includes removing the roadway down to its base and rebuilding it. Access will be maintained for homes and businesses, as well as for trash collection and mail delivery. The project also includes the addition of two-foot paved shoulder on each side of the new 7-mile stretch of S.R. 1. The official state detour for the S.R. 1 closure will be S.R. 18 to S.R. 116 to S.R. 18. Local detours may also be available.
INDOT says a full-depth reclamation is an environmentally friendly method of rebuilding the road, which recycles the aggregate, the subgrade and some soils to re-use. This results in a much stronger, stable base for the new road. It also results in less hauling away of materials.
The full-depth reclamation of S.R. 1 is expected to be completed by early October, weather permitting. The combined project was awarded to Milestone Contractors for $3.4 million.
